Watch!

Beams of Hope

The Unseen, Unspoken
and Unchanging Status of Covenant Love!
Part One

by Linda Boyette

For the ways of a man are before the eyes of the Lord, and He watches all his paths.
Proverbs 5:21
I have learned this week that in our English language dictionary the little word watch is used both as a noun and verb. I’ve also discovered through God’s Word the term watch receives its foundation straight from the character of The Almighty Holy God whose heart overflows with unfailing, unending love to you, me, and all who will receive Him.  Watching is a trait of His likeness and is the essence of the promise for living in a covenant with another. As a noun, the word watch comes from the same root as wake, which see. The noun is a state of attendance without sleep, giving close observation and vigilance against danger and being on guard, of keeping and protecting against an enemy. The verbal usage of watch is to be awake or continue without sleep. The action overflows right out of its being – seeing, guarding, to have in ones keeping, to lie in wait for, to tend, to observe in order to detect, prevent from enemy and to “see” the progress of. WOW! What a clear description of the God who neither slumbers nor sleeps, who sees, cares, guards, keeps and lays down His life for His sheep.

Often times I desire and seek to live in the fulfilled promises of the New Testament Covenant without asking the Holy Spirit of Jesus to give me His wisdom and understanding of God’s intent in His Word declared and demonstrated in the Old Testament. In this week’s reading, we are given, at great length, the truth about wisdom and living “watchful” to the intentions of God. Solomon admonishes his readers to cry out, search for, give ear to and live in the wisdom of God, presenting key verses in these Old Testament Proverbs to prepare us for the daily reality of living in God’s watchful eye of wisdomJESUS!

Wisdom speaks: From everlasting I was established, from the beginning, from the earliest times of the earth… For he who finds me finds life and obtains favor from the Lord (Proverbs 8:23, 35). Behold, I will pour out my spirit on you; I will make my words known to you (Proverbs 1: 23b). For the Lord gives wisdom; from His mouth come knowledge and understanding (Proverbs 2: 6).

Do you remember the wonderful truth of last week’s II Corinthians 1:20? All of God’s promises are yes or fulfilled in Christ Jesus. Jesus allows all of us to participate in the life promised in Proverbs. And since we are His children, we will share His treasures- for everything God gives to His Son, Christ, is ours, too. But if we are to share His glory, we must also share His suffering  (Romans 8:17 NLT).

In other words we must have the Spirit of JESUS within us speaking, guiding, feeding, loving and thinking if we are going to know the reality of Godly wisdom and desire to live in His “watchful” eye. The Holy Spirit brings to us the One, Christ, in whom lie hidden all the treasure of wisdom and knowledge  (Colossians 2:3). The Spirit of the Triune God takes up His residence in us! Incredible! Unbelievable! We can have the intimacy of His watchful, loving and caring eye every second of everyday living within us. Only the Holy Spirit of Jesus can make us truly wise as we live under the “watchfulness” of Jesus while He pours into us His love, His hope, His peace and His joy.

Wisdom Speaks: In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God…In Him was life and the life was the Light of men (John 1:1,3). The Spirit is God’s guarantee that He will give us everything He promised and that He has purchased us to be His own people. This is just one more reason for us to praise our glorious God(Ephesians 1:14 NLT).
