So the Lord gave Israel all the land which He had sworn to give to their fathers,
and they possessed it and lived in it…
I commend you to God and to the word of His grace, which is able to build you up and to give you the inheritance among all those who are sanctified.
In this week’s reading of Joshua, the inheritance for God’s chosen people was still being distributed. This inheritance was the very land promised to their forefathers. The only problem was their fathers were stiff-necked, hard-hearted and would not trust God to bring this promise to reality. Because of Israel’s unbelief only two of those original fathers received God’s declared Promised Land. Upon their death, God kept His promise because of Abraham, who, five hundred years before, was reckoned righteous by his faith to trust in God’s Word. God prepared the land making the way for the next generation to claim what was now their inheritance.
There is a crucial clause of this willed inheritance for the people of Israel we tend to forget. You shall have no inheritance in their land nor own any portion among them; I am your portion and your inheritance among the sons of Israel… to the tribe of Levi Moses did not give an inheritance; the Lord, the God of Israel, are their inheritance, as He had promised to them” (Numbers 18:20, 23; Joshua 13:13). The spiritual leaders, those who offered atoning sacrifices before Yahweh and expected offerings on behalf of the entire chosen people, were never promised an inheritance of land or riches. The priests and Levites were given the inheritance of God Himself according to His Word. He alone was to be their portion and they were to trust Him to be enough for all of their needs. When they failed to remember God Is Enough and coveted what the other chosen ones received, it became their downfall.
What I love about this easily overlooked truth is it applies to you and me today. We too have been called out to be separate unto God – not from others but from a world that rejects Jesus. We who live in Christ have an inheritance brought to us through God’s own blood and His given guarantee of receiving all that He has promised through the Holy Spirit of Jesus. In Him, you also, after listening to the message of truth, the gospel of your salvation, having also believed, you were sealed in Him with the Holy Spirit of promise, who is given as a pledge of our inheritance, with a view to the redemption of God’s own possession, to the praise of His glory (Ephesians 1:13-14).
Our undefiled, imperishable inheritance begins now in the One who does not fade away- Jesus! When He alone is our portion, we live having hope, knowing peace and sharing holy love. Are you aware for all who will believe and ask, His Holy Spirit pours into us the Presence of Promise, guaranteeing an inheritance that was the intended life for our earliest forebearers, Adam and Eve? Adam and Eve could have chosen God’s covenant of lavish love knowing unbroken fellowship with Father, Son and Holy Spirit. We are the benefactors of their choice and God’s Calvary Grace. In Jesus’ blood and His Holy Spirit alone we have offered to us all we need for living God’s intention, planned before the foundation of the world. This inheritance fulfills the will of God’s love. This gave Him great pleasure (Ephesians 1:4; II Thess.2:13).
Now rescued from darkness, reconciled to the Father through His Son Jesus, we are His own priceless possession, His chosen royal priesthood, a holy nation and the temple of His dwelling. We who are now holy and alive may offer up spiritual sacrifices acceptable to God through Jesus Christ (I Peter 2; Romans 12). Spirit-filled hearts are the home of His presence, commissioned to carry His love, come boldly to His throne and intercede on behalf of the whole world. Such hearts were never promised an inheritance of earthly treasures. I care for neither silver nor gold, land nor fame, just the inheritance written with blood, in Jesus’ name.
Lord, you alone are my inheritance, my cup of blessing. You guard all that is mine.
Jesus IS Enough!
